    Trainer

    John Dixon
    GARAGE GURUS

In this webinar we will discuss how to become more proficient in interpreting the information the scan tool provides for Engine Performance diagnostics. Utilizing scan tool information to gain direction is the shortest and quickest path to get a problem vehicle accurately diagnosed. Putting all the pieces together during an engine diagnostic is a lot like reading a road map; the key to success is finding the shortest path to the destination without getting lost. Multiple vehicle case studies will be reviewed demonstrating important PID relationships through use of the graphing functions within the scan tool.

A Deep Dive Into the CAN (Part 1)

    Level: Intermediate

    Trainer

    Richard Cregar
    AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING AUTHORITY ATA

An in-depth investigation of the history and structure of the Controller Area Networks (CAN) as utilized on late model light and heavy duty vehicles. The course will investigate both the hardware platform and the software platforms that various types of CAN in use today are structured and operate. Diagnostic strategies will be based upon the poorly understood reality that the CAN network functions both as a capacitor and an inductor. Therefore it is subject to both Capacative and Inductive Reactance. This fact is key to performing fast and accurate diagnostics on CAN networks.

    Desired Outcomes:

    • Familiarity with theory and operation of CAN
    • Understanding that there are a wide variety of CAN networks and they must be identified prior to testing
    • Diagnostic strategies, based upon the DVOM as a primary test tool
    • Demystification of CAN, debunking many common CAN myths
    • Sparking an interest in the learner not to fear CAN to excite them to pursue further study into operating and test strategies.

Labscope Usage for the New Owner

    Level: Beginner

    Trainer

    Jim Wilson
    GROUP TRAINING ACADEMY

Setting up a Labscope and getting the pattern stable can be a daunting task for the new owner. How to set the time, voltage, and trigger is the first step in all testing. Testing the five primary signal types found on vehicles (direct current, alternating current, frequency, pulse-width, and serial data) such as the CAN pattern is next, followed by how to understand the five critical dimensions of amplitude, frequency, shape, pulse-width, and pattern of the signal. Understanding these items will make you more comfortable and make money by using your labscope daily.

Instructor Jim Wilson has put together a must have class for every technician out there. This class will help you when it takes longer to diagnose a job than you would like. This covers a step by step approach to engine diagnostics: analytical troubleshooting—where to start, preliminary tests you can do to be the most accurate with your diagnostic time. This is not a superficial glance at what it takes to diagnose today's complicated vehicles, no, this is an in-depth study guide of how to spot problems before they are problems.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Deciding which tool is best to use for which type of job
    • In-depth coverage on scanners, labscopes, graphing meters, low amp probes
    • Graphing meters
    • Low Amp Clamp testing – (quick tests for injectors, fuel pumps, ignition coils, even ignition modules)

Breaking the Mold, Getting Out of the Price Based Model and Into the Value Based Model

    Level: Beginner

    Trainer

    Murray Voth
    President, RPM TRAINING

This course is about making a paradigm shift. It is about shifting away from the commodity, price-based model that many shops have fallen into and becoming a consultative and service-based business model. The reason most other trades people are paid more than automotive technicians is that they charge straight time similar to lawyers and accountants. These trades and professions recognized early on that the only thing they have to sell is time. So, they have figured out how to get paid for every minute. In addition to that, when consumers use these trades and professions, they are looking for a solution, not the specific price for an item. For example, if I have a plumbing leak, I want to know how much to fix the leak, not the cost of 12 inches of copper pipe.

General learning outcome: Shop owners and managers will learn that between 50 and 60% of the driving public want to have their vehicle serviced and repaired in the most convenient way possible. These potential clients are not price conscious but value conscious. That means they are not interested in the price of a specific item, they just want someone to manage their transportation and keep it safe, reliable, and economical. It means that looking after clients and their vehicles this way will automatically make a technician more efficient and productive, which will lead to higher wages and better profitability.

    Specific learning outcomes:

    • How to gain at least one billed hour per technician per day
    • How to gain at least .5 billed hour per repair order.
    • Understand how 1 and 2 will contribute to improved gross profit on labour and improved net profit.
    • Gain the knowledge and understanding of how to move away from being a commodity and price base shop to a consultative and service and value-based shop.
