Student Rebuilders, Start Your Engines!

Engines weren’t the only things firing on all cylinders at AAPEX 2025. The brand-new Student Engine Rebuild Competition revved up the show floor with a surge of energy, drawing big crowds eager to watch the automotive aftermarket’s rising stars tear down and rebuild Chevy 350 engines in real time.

The inaugural competition showcased the next generation of skilled technicians—students from post-secondary technical schools who raced the clock in a high-speed test of precision, teamwork and grit. In front of an enthusiastic audience, each team fully dismantled and reassembled their assigned Chevy 350, proving their mechanical mastery under pressure.

The challenge was simple in theory but technical in execution: strip the engine down piece by piece, inspect it, and rebuild it so it could rotate a full 360 degrees—all faster than the competition. During the dismantle phase, teams removed rocker covers, rocker assemblies, push rods and lifters, inlet manifolds, water pumps, heads, pistons and rod assemblies, oil pumps, crankshafts, timing covers and camshafts. Once every component was laid out, the clock kept ticking as teams began the reassembly process, carefully reinstalling and torquing each bolt to spec.

Every engine bay looked the same at the start. Organizers supplied professional-grade tools—including socket sets, torque wrenches, breaker bars, ring compressors and more—and ensured a level playing field with uniform rules. Crank bolts were pre-tightened to spec, bearings were left in their bores, rings were on pistons, and all gaskets were removed and reused during reassembly.

But the real difference came from the students themselves Their focus, their teamwork and their relentless drive to get it right. For many, it wasn’t just about winning; it was about proving their readiness for an aftermarket industry hungry for skilled talent.
