LAS VEGAS – October 29, 2025 – Walk into any independent repair shop in America and you’ll hear a familiar refrain: “We can handle Fords, Chevys, Toyotas all day long. But when a Mercedes or BMW rolls in, it’s a different story.”

Imported and European vehicles are no longer a niche. According to Experian’s VIO Q3 2021 data, at least 13% of vehicles on U.S. roads are European imports, and that share continues to grow. Yet for many shop owners, these cars represent frustration, wasted hours, and too often, lost business.

The reality is that repairing European imports requires a different toolkit, both technically and operationally. But with the right preparation, this segment can become one of the most profitable in your business.

1. The technical data gap

For most domestic makes, repair data and standardized labor times are readily available. Not so for many European brands. Their documentation is often fragmented, inconsistently translated, and rarely aligned with U.S. insurance or emissions standards.

That leaves technicians juggling multiple sources or taking risky guesses – a dangerous game with high-value vehicles.

“We had to use three different sources just to confirm one repair procedure on a VW Passat,” said one owner of an Ohio-based shop. “It’s not efficient, and it eats into our margins.”

Having reliable, OE-based data that includes European models can eliminate guesswork, speed up diagnostics, and build technician confidence.

2. Complex electronics and system architecture

European imports are built with sophistication in mind; multiplex wiring, advanced driver-assist systems, and proprietary electronic modules are common. Without detailed wiring diagrams or component specifications, even senior technicians can struggle to pinpoint faults.

But a growing number of online learning resources and multi-brand diagnostic platforms now make it easier to upskill technicians and source verified parts without leaving the shop.

4. The diesel factor

While diesel passenger vehicles are standard in Europe, they’re still relatively rare in the U.S. Many technicians have limited exposure to AdBlue systems, particulate filters, and SCR technology. That unfamiliarity often leads to hesitation or misdiagnosis.

However, diesel repairs often come with higher margins and fewer competitors. For shops willing to learn, this niche can quickly turn into a reliable profit stream.

5. The business impact: turning “no” into “yes”

Every job refused represents more than lost revenue; it’s a missed customer relationship. Turning away a Mercedes today could mean losing a loyal customer who might have brought their domestic vehicle back tomorrow.

By contrast, saying “Yes, we can service your vehicle” transforms a challenge into an opportunity:

A single Mercedes A-service can generate between $600 and $900 in revenue. Servicing premium brands builds long-term loyalty and trust. Diesel expertise opens access to an underserved market. Handling complex imports elevates your shop’s overall reputation.

From challenge to competitive advantage

Independent shops that invest in comprehensive technical data platforms covering European and diesel vehicles are already reaping the rewards. Reliable data means faster turnaround, fewer comebacks, and higher confidence at the front desk.

Combine that with targeted training and modern diagnostic tools, and your team can take on work that competitors still refuse.

The bottom line

Imported vehicles aren’t going anywhere; in fact, they now represent nearly half of all new cars sold in the U.S. Shops that prepare today will own this business tomorrow.

By improving access to OE repair data, investing in technician training, and saying “yes” to more Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, Mini, and diesel jobs, independent repairers can turn one of their biggest pain points into a lasting profit center.
