LAS VEGAS – July 11, 2025 – The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median salary for an auto technician at just shy of $50,000 per year as of 2024. While experience, certifications and geography all play a role, many of those working in the space say overall auto tech compensation is much higher.

WrenchWay, for example, polled some 4,700 technicians, shop owners, managers, instructors and students in 2024 and tallied up some different numbers.

According to WrenchWay, the average annual compensation for:

• Auto technicians is $90,159;
• Collision repair is $89,500; and
• Diesel technicians: $85,102.

How do techs feel about those numbers? 58% of technicians say their shop provides fair compensation, according to the survey.

However, “78% of technicians agree that ‘higher pay’ is the most urgent issue that needs to be addressed to help fix the technician shortage.”

The survey surfaced other interesting statistics as well:

• “55% of technicians knew they wanted to pursue a career in automotive/diesel in high school.”
• “81% of technicians would be willing to go to a local school and talk to students about their jobs if their shop allowed them time on the job to do so.”
