AAPEX 2023 Outlines Sustainability Initiatives

MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers and the Auto Care Association are committed to a more sustainable future, and as the co-owners of AAPEX, they are leading new initiatives at this year’s event that will reduce its environmental impact. “These days, sustainability is all around us. If your aftermarket company is a member of MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers, you have a go-to place to accelerate your sustainability journey with the newly launched MEMA Center for Sustainability,” said John Chalifoux, chief operating officer, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers and chief sustainability officer, MEMA – The Vehicle Suppliers Association. The Center for Sustainability was formed to meet the needs of MEMA members given the rise in the importance of sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

“Our underlying message highlights that sustainability is all about being responsible to people, the planet and your business,” he adds. “When it comes to ESG data, think of five action verbs: collect, analyze, validate, report and communicate. Whatever you do, make sure you tell your story. And while you’re at it, let’s take full advantage of the opportunity to collectively elevate our great industry.”

Danielle Thomas-Pollard, PMP, IT director and liaison for the newly formed Auto Care Association Sustainability Committee, adds that sustainability is a critical topic that is on the minds of many in the automotive aftermarket. “As our industry becomes more aware of its growing impact on the environment, more and more industry stakeholders are proactively addressing the need for sustainability through means including recycling, remanufacturing, eco-friendly packaging, helping vehicles safely remain on the road longer and perform more efficiently, by offering sustainable products and services, and by using energy-efficient equipment and processes,” said Thomas-Pollard. She notes that vehicle owners are also looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint which they can do by employing efficient driving techniques (Ex., reducing vehicle idling and consolidating errands) and keeping up with routine car maintenance (Ex., keeping tires properly inflated, changing air filters, and getting tune-ups). By taking steps to be more sustainable, together we can help to protect the environment and make a positive contribution to our planet and future generations.

Building a Sustainable AAPEX

AAPEX is partnering with exhibitors, attendees and vendors to adopt responsible practices at this year’s event in Las Vegas.

Exhibiting companies are strongly encouraged to participate in the AAPEX Exhibitor Sustainability Pledge, taking actionable steps to decrease their carbon footprint, divert waste from landfills, conserve water and energy, and make more sustainable procurement choices. As of Oct. 19, more than 35 companies have already pledged their commitment and will be recognized at AAPEX 2023. They will also be spotlighted on the new Sustainability Self-Guided Media Tour.

In addition, the Best Booth Awards, open to all exhibitors, will now feature a dedicated sustainability category and the New Product Showcase will highlight sustainable products with a special notation.

How Attendees Can Support Sustainability at AAPEX

Attendees are encouraged to play an active role in minimizing the event’s environmental footprint. This includes simple actions like recycling while at The Venetian and adopting mindful consumption practices during food functions (only taking what will be consumed) to curb waste and lower carbon emissions linked to food production. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to practice energy conservation by turning off lights when not needed and participating in the hotels’ Linen Reuse Programs, contributing to water conservation efforts.

AAPEX also recently offered a free webinar, “Sustainability in the Aftermarket,” to help attendees become familiar with top sustainability issues, gain an understanding of current regulations and how they impact businesses, and learn about the latest best practices and opportunities around sustainability. The webinar was presented by Ben Spitz, VP of Strategy and Sustainability, Parts Authority, and is now available on-demand.

AAPEX will also host a free networking event, Sustainabili-TEA (and Coffee), on Nov. 2 during AAPEX for anyone interested in discussing the latest developments in the industry. The networking event will be hosted by the AAPEX co-owner associations: the Auto Care Association and MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers.

How AAPEX Partners and Vendors Are Working Toward a Greener Event

AAPEX collaborates with numerous partners and vendors to ensure a greener event. This year, AAPEX has joined forces with Honeycomb Strategies, a prominent sustainable event consulting firm, to assess impacts and implement effective strategies for sustainable event management.

Freeman, a key collaborator, has set ambitious goals of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and reducing GHG emissions by 50% by 2023. The Venetian Expo in Las Vegas, the event’s venue, is deeply invested in eco-friendly operations, focusing on waste reduction, resource conservation and the use of sustainable materials. The property, certified LEED, boasts one of the highest recycling rates in Nevada and stands as an early achiever of APEX/ASTM advanced (Level 2) Green Venue certification.
