The New EV Experience at AAPEX 2023: Products, Training and Insights

Michael Chung, Auto Care Association

The Joint EV Trends and Outlook Forecast released at AAPEX 2022 reports that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 6% of new vehicle registrations in 2022 and are forecast to reach 56% of vehicles sold in 2035 and 81% in 2045. This would translate to 19% of the U.S. car parc being BEVs or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in 2035 and 42% in 2040. The latest updates to the forecast will be presented by the Auto Care Association and MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers during AAPEX 2023 in Las Vegas.

The increased adoption of BEVs is transforming the automotive aftermarket with no signs of letting up and will have implications for parts manufacturers, service providers and warehouse distributors.

“Add in that in 2018, there were 15 BEV models available. In 2022, there were 43 models, and the projections are that there will be 150 in 2026 and 169 models in 2029,” notes Michael Chung, senior director, Market Intelligence, Auto Care Association. “So certainly, we have a lot of inertia and a lot of momentum as we go forward.”

Philip Atkins, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers

“With this large increase in the number of models, consumers have a greater chance of finding the vehicle that matches exactly what their preferences are, it’s as plain and simple as that,” added Philip Atkins, director, Strategic Research & Planning, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers. “We know what the future looks like. It’s going to be electric vehicles, and they will have advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in them. So we know it’s coming, and we have time to prepare for it.”
