BladeGuard™ today announced the completion of its durability and performance testing of BladeGuard, the unique and patented wiper blade protection system. "We are very pleased with the results, and honestly surprised by what else we found," says Andrey Isayan, BladeGuard's inventor and entrepreneur.
A & A Inventors Group LLC, the company behind BladeGuard, introduced its flagship product to the automotive aftermarket at AAPEX 2017. The purpose behind BladeGuard is to protect the critical wiping edge or "lip" of wiper blades for better driver visibility and safety.
The feedback BladeGuard received from retailers, repair shops and manufacturers at AAPEX 2017 was very encouraging, according to Andrey. "Although the feedback was positive and people were excited, we received many questions about durability and the affect on the wiper blades themselves." Andrey continues. "We decided, we better make sure."
So BladeGuard set out to test the product in the field and in the lab. "Using the first-articles from October 2017 and the subsequent pilot production run, we set out to test BladeGuard to get answers to the questions we received at AAPEX 2017, and to gain confidence in the overall product," says Henning Zieger, President of Henning Product Development in Pasadena, CA who developed BladeGuard with Andrey. "What we did not expect to find is the reversing of permaset, which is the deformation of the wiper blade that causes poor visibility and performance," Henning continued.
Tests were conducted under two primary groupings: field testing and lab testing.
The field testing started in November 2017 – right after the show. Using first articles and brand-new premium wiper blades, a test vehicle was fitted with BladeGuard on the passenger's side and without BladeGuard on the driver's side. The BladeGuard reminder sticker included with the product and mounted on the inside of the windshield uses thermochromic ink that turns red to indicate when the windshield reaches 120°F or above. The passenger's side wiper blade was placed into BladeGuard whenever the reminder sticker turned red.
In July 2018, after a very hot month, the windshield was cleaned using the vehicles windshield washing system. Amazingly, the driver's side visibility was quite obscured while the passenger's side wiped cleanly. It was noted that the area was dusty and the windshield was covered in dew the morning of this particular test.
Since July, the test vehicle continues to perform with similar results, according to BladeGuard. "The driver's side requires much more water and washing to get a clean windshield," notes Henning, "which greatly obscures visibility while driving. Even after washing, the driver's side shows residue where the water dried indicating a degraded wiper edge. The passenger side is clean within one wipe and visibility is greatly improved."
Another test vehicle was commissioned in September 2018. This vehicle had two-year-old premium blades. A slight chatter was noted. Again, BladeGuard was fitted to the passenger side while no BladeGuard was fitted to the driver's side. After one month the vehicle was tested. Surprisingly, the passenger's side was clean in one cycle while the driver's side left blurry visibility. In addition, the driver's side blade continues to chatter while the passenger side is silent.
"We're working to better understand what's going on here, but the theory is that since BladeGuard lifts the wiping blade off of the windshield, the lip of the blade is allowed to hang freely, allowing a permaset blade to return to its original shape over time," says Henning. "Add to that, BladeGuard shields the wiping edge on all sides. The critical wiping edge does not collect dust and dirt like a blade left on the windshield, making the initial wipe clean rather than smearing the dirt on your windscreen."
BladeGuard was tested in a lab setting for durability, affects on the wiper blade and potential degradation of BladeGuard due to UV and ozone exposure.
Durability tests were conducted using a rear window wiper blade assembly on flat glass. The wiper blade was placed in BladeGuard and allowed to run one cycle with a spray of water on the glass. The wiper was then returned to BladeGuard for the next cycle. A total of 2000 cycles was performed. This is similar to using BladeGuard for five years assuming two trips per day with an average of 6 months rain through the year, or 10 years with three months of rain and two trips per day.
The test BladeGuard sample was then removed and observed under a microscope for any signs of cracks, wear or fatigue. No noticeable difference was observed as compared with a new BladeGuard. The test sample remains stable with the flexible hinge portion continuing to be strong, flexible and with no signs of degradation.
The wiper blade was also observed under microscopic imaging. Other than slight discoloration from the water, the wiper blade shows no signs of wear or fatigue while the shape remains straight and without permaset.
UV and ozone tests were conducted in a sealed UV-C test chamber, which also emits ozone. UV light degrades many plastics; it's why garden furniture turns chalky and brittle over time. Ozone attacks many organic compounds. Ozone is an oxidation process that causes rubber tires to crack, automotive paint to turn flat and flake away, and dashboards to harden and crack. BladeGuard was placed in the chamber for 165 hours and then removed for observation.
The test sample remains stable with the flexible hinge portion continuing to be strong, flexible and with no signs of degradation. Microscope observations show no signs of cracks, wear or fatigue.
